One of my first real jobs in the early 2000s was at a coffee shop located in a trailer on the side of a busy Texas highway. We had a drive-thru, blended drinks, sandwiches, espresso, soymilk, and a stereo system that blasted Motown anytime I had control of the tunes. While it wasn't the hip or artistic coffee house that I always dreamt of working in, it was a coffee shop and I loved it.

{Round-Up} 10 Vegan Summer Coffee Recipes

I'm so excited to share this summer coffee round-up featuring gorgeous vegan coffee recipes! If you love flavorful iced coffee, dairy-free cold brew, or vegan frappuccinos then this round-up is for you.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "Girl, you've been gone for weeks and you return with a round-up??". Listen guys, we need to talk.

While House Vegan is my number one passion, I decided to pick up a couple of side hustles. Both have had their own time-intensive learning periods, and I've dedicated the majority of June so far to these little money-making endeavors. It hasn't been for naught though! While they haven't made us millionaires, I have seen some ROI which is so nice. Sometimes you just need a small professional win, you know?

Because I've been hustling, I've been extra dedicated to my coffee this summer. While I'm usually all about hot black coffee, warm weather does something to my tastes and I can't get enough of summer coffee drinks. I adore iced coffee, coconutty coffee, cold brew… you name the summer brew and I probably want it. Check out the gorgeous vegan summer coffee recipes that I'm completely drooling over right now:

Two posts in two days, you guys! I'm tellin ya, I've got lots to share, and now that we're all moved in I can finally get back to talking to you. I've missed you!

Let's talk about Mardi Gras, shall we? That glorious Tuesday where one can indulge before Lent. Which – if I'm being honest – doesn't apply to me at all, but it did growing up. My mom was all about Lent, and every year I would try to give up candy only to fail miserably. My sweet tooth has always been bossy.

Banana Berry Fresh Smoothie + Giveaway of 40 Days of Green Smoothies

You know those beautiful instagram accounts that are full of bright and colorful smoothies? Yeah, that will never be my IG. While my husband and I do use colorful produce, our smoothies are often one of three colors: brown, beige, or (sometimes) purple. So that's boring.

This recipe is likely one the most beautiful smoothies I've ever made, and it was such a delightful happenstance. I'm lucky to be part of Becky Striepe's blog tour for her gorgeous book, 40 Days of Green Smoothies, and I just sort of put myself down for the smoothie that sounded particularly good to me at that moment. I didn't realize that it was going to be this amazing princess-pink cloud of goodness!

I've really been feeling hot chocolate this year. I mean, I'm always feeling hot chocolate, but now I'm like super feeling it. I don't know what it is! Normally I'm all about coffee or tea, but I can't get enough hot cocoa right now. I've had plenty of my Cinnamon Hot Chocolate, a few mugs of the Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate from Fall FoMo No More, tons of peppermint hot chocolate made from Trader Joe's Chocolate Peppermint Almond Beverage, and even some extra delicious hot chocolate made from Taza Chocolate Discs. Our dear friends made us a batch using a chocolate disc during our gingerbread house shenanigans, and it was definitely one of the highlights of the evening for me. So good! Given all of this recent hot chocolate love I figured it was time to see what else I could do with it.

Autumn is the greatest season ever, and the habits that my husband and I take on in the beginning of fall set a tone for the rest of the year. The chaos of summer is over, my husband is back to teaching, and my big fall plans are ready to be actualized. The routine we start in September really sets up our whole year.

I love routine posts, and figured that now would be the perfect time to show y'all a little bit of my life behind the blog. Mornings set up the whole day, and this is what ours looks like most of the week:

It's basically Harry Potter season, right? I think that we can consider the whole last quarter of the year "Harry Potter Season" since the series is so Halloweeny and Christmassy all at once.

While it isn't my all time favorite geeky franchise (Star Trek forever!), I do really enjoy the books and movies. Particularly the parts with food because I'm me. One Harry Potter treat that has always piqued my interest is butterbeer.

Y'all, FINALLY! I know it's still September and hot outside, but Labor Day is over, and you can't make fun of me anymore. Fall is here! Not officially, but according to the laws of society and retail* it is fall. That means I'm about to go full basic, and pumpkin all the things.

*I made that up. Those laws obviously aren't real.

This Gingerbread White Wine Cocktail was created out of my determination to truly celebrate Christmas in July this year. Every summer I think about doing something for the holiday, and I always forget until the day of. Not this year!

Yesterday we decorated our place with Christmas decor, threw on some Christmas music, made our house really cold, and invited friends over to feast on gingerbread cookies, spiced cider, and this cocktail. It was such a fun way to get cozy in the middle of summer. I barely even noticed that it was 98 degrees outside.

House Vegan’s Disneyland Week: Champagne Dole Whip Floats

Disneyland week is just about over, and I saved the best recipe for last. These Champagne Dole Whip Floats are like drinking an effervescent tiki drink in Adventureland. They're like sipping nectar on a sandy beach at sunset in 1960's Hawaii. They're really really good, y'all.

Momoko is a bubble tea shop and Japanese boutique near The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs (The Fed), a building that I spent a lot of time swing dancing in in my teens. In fact, it was a group of other teenage swing dancers who introduced me to Momoko. I was 16, and it was my first glimpse into anything kawaii. Of course, back then we'd never heard the word 'kawaii'. We just called it "cute Japanese stuff".

Pumpkin Pie Almond Milk – A House Vegan: Fall FoMo No More Recipe | Vegan MoFo 2015

Ok, so I missed three days of Vegan MoFo. I'm trying to convince myself that I'm ok with that. I really should be ok with it because the whole reason for my MoFo slacking is to finish my book. Priorities!

I was a little bummed about missing the favorite cookbook prompt so I'm doing it now. It's fine, right? It shouldn't come as a shock that my favorite cookbook is…..

Funny that I'm writing a post for an old fashioned cold remedy while I'm feeling a little under the weather. Hot Toddies in their original form contain whiskey, lemon, hot water, and honey. They are incredibly soothing when you're sick. The lemon gives you a boost of Vitamin C, the hot water and honey calm sore throats, and the whiskey helps you sleep. It's an old timey solution that I welcome with a few modifications. Especially in my current state.

I love a great homemade ginger ale. When I lived in LA I used to visit a Vietnamese restaurant in Silverlake called Gingergrass, and they had the best house made ginger ale. As a sucker for quality sodas I not only ordered the ginger ale with every meal there, but I would also drive from Burbank to Silverlake to get some to go. It was a real obsession for a season.

How to Make Coffee Using A Ceramic Filter

Step 1: Measure out 1/4 cup of medium ground coffee.
Step 2: Place your Ceramic Filter on top of your tea pot. Line the ceramic filter with an appropriately sized unbleached paper coffee filter. Add in your coffee grounds.

Step 3: Bring 20 OZ (2 1/2 cups) of water to a boil. Slowly and carefully pour the boiled water into the filter making sure to fully saturate the grounds. Allow the coffee to drip.
Step 4. Once the coffee is done dripping discard the grounds and paper filter. Put the lid on your tea pot, and pour yourself a beautiful mugful.
Step 5: Enjoy your Cuppa!

This is how I make my morning coffee. It’s a delightful ritual <3

Update 9/2016 – This post may be three years old, but the recipe is still one of my most popular. It gets so much love that I figured it was time to update it. Don't worry though – the recipe is still the same!

When I first wrote this recipe I was super into that show, Once Upon a Time. Have you seen it? The gist is that storybook characters are cursed to live in our world without magic or memories of their previous lives. I know it's super nerdy, but those first two seasons are wonderful.

In the show, Snow White (my favorite Disney princess!) and her daughter enjoy cinnamon hot chocolate, and when I saw that I felt so super cool because I've been drinking cinnamon hot chocolate since I was a teenager.

Warm Chai for Fall Nights and Christmas in September

One thing I love about cool nights is warm drinks. I really enjoy sipping sweet and spicy chai after dinner, but the caffeine definitely keeps me up. To combat this I started drinking caffeine free Rooibos Chai. I dress it up with warm milk, spices and vanilla to make it extra cozy!

Warm Chai for Fall Nights
Ingredients:
  • 1 rooibos chai tea bag (or any caffeine free chai)
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy milk
  • 1 teaspoon sweetener
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1. Put the tea bag and boiling water in your favorite mug to steep according to the tea’s instructions.
2. While the tea steeps, combine the milk, sweetener and ginger in a small saucepan. Warm the milk over medium heat until it’s hot through and through (not boiling). Take it off the heat and add the vanilla.
3. Add the warm milk to the tea once it’s finished steeping. Give your chai a nice stir and enjoy.

The new and very official Christmas Post button.

Tonight I’m drinking my chai while working on the Countdown to the Organized Christmas CountdownI know Christmas planning in September seems mad, but this system is pretty incredible. Read here if you need an explanation!

The August task was to plan Christmas crafts, and while I’m not much of a crafter, I do have one project that I want to do this yearI know a family that would love this Instagram art piece. I’ve already started gathering pictures from their Instagram 🙂

September’s task is to get ready for gift giving. We’re already on it! I’ve got my Master Gift List ready, and a few gifts have already been purchased. Yay!

The Organized Christmas Countdown officially starts in late October so I’ll spend the next few weeks completing my Christmas PlannerOctober is very The Nightmare Before Christmas-ey in our home. Very Halloweenish with a bunch of Christmas thrown in.

It may seem early, but it’s time to start pondering the holiday seasons to come. Even if you’re not ready for Christmas, Halloween is just around the corner!

Vegan Brown Rice Horchata

Horchata is an incredibly refreshing drink made from rice, cinnamon, vanilla and milk. I made tacos last night for dinner and I knew that horchata would be a perfect addition to the meal. It helped that it was 80 degrees outside and I was craving something to celebrate the warm and beautiful day.

I made the Horchata, Iced from Vegan Explosion subbing brown rice for white. It was perfect! As Crystal’s recipes tend to be 🙂

vegan mofo: ginger ale

Last year I had a blog that I never used and no one ever read. Of the 7 things I put up there, my favorite has to be my homemade ginger ale. I’ve taken it to potlucks and it’s always a hit. Not only is it delicious, but it makes you feel better when you’re a) hungover b) sick c) sad or d) all of the above.

I know I’ve been a little ginger crazy this week, but it’s so good. Can ya blame me?

Homemade Ginger Ale:
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. ginger (peeled and sliced)
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • sparkling water
1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Cook until it becomes thick and syrupy (about 4 – 7 minutes). Remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain and refrigerate to cool.
2. Once cooled, mix 1/2 c. ginger syrup with 3/4 c. sparkling water. Garnish with cinnamon stick or lime wedge and enjoy.
