Trader Joe’s Spring 2017 Vegan Coffee Products

Hey friends, I know that I just did a Trader Joe's post, but this is important! Last month Trader Joe's unrolled their coffee season which features a ton of coffee flavored vegan products. As you know, I'm a coffee fiend so obviously, this couldn't go without my input.

I bought all of the featured vegan coffee products that I could find so let's get to it:

This post is in no way sponsored by Trader Joe's. I'm just a huge huge huge fan! Also, keep in mind that these prices are accurate for my region in Texas. Prices can vary based on your location.

Hey, friends! Let me tell you a little something about my love for Trader Joe's. Back when we lived in Burbank, our house was within walking distance of a great Trader Joe's, and I used to go there a few times a week to stock up on stuff. I would say essentials, but I doubt we can call vegan ice cream sandwiches and spring rolls essentials. Point is, I was there so often that I became friendly with the woman who ran the samples station. So friendly that we would ask each other how our vacations, families, holidays, etc. had been. When we moved back to TX I think the thing I missed the most about our neighborhood was our Trader Joe's.

I've been a long time TJ's shopper, and when ATX finally got theirs two years after we moved here it was such a big deal for me and my husband. Before that, we had been driving to San Antonio to get our fix, and that was getting mighty cumbersome.

Banana Berry Fresh Smoothie + Giveaway of 40 Days of Green Smoothies

You know those beautiful instagram accounts that are full of bright and colorful smoothies? Yeah, that will never be my IG. While my husband and I do use colorful produce, our smoothies are often one of three colors: brown, beige, or (sometimes) purple. So that's boring.

This recipe is likely one the most beautiful smoothies I've ever made, and it was such a delightful happenstance. I'm lucky to be part of Becky Striepe's blog tour for her gorgeous book, 40 Days of Green Smoothies, and I just sort of put myself down for the smoothie that sounded particularly good to me at that moment. I didn't realize that it was going to be this amazing princess-pink cloud of goodness!

Hi friends! I recently  met a dear friend for coffee and waffles at Fat Cats, a local vegan-friendly coffee house, and it dawned on me that you dears might like to hear about it.

Fat Cats is known and loved among Austin vegans, but it hasn't made many "Must visit" or "Best of" lists which I think is a shame. To be fair, it's a little young compared to other popular establishments (it opened in 2014), and it isn't 100% vegan (though it is mostly vegan). I imagine that that sort of ambiguity may partially be to blame for its lack of buzz, but nonetheless it's a great little spot that I'm excited to share with you.

Pumpkin season is finally here! You know it's official when Trader Joe's starts softly stocking their pumpkin items.

My store had oodles of pumpkin stuff on the shelves, but nothing advertising that fact. Fine by me! That meant I had less people like me to deal with while shopping. I walked down every aisle multiple times to check out the pumpkin items currently available. If it was vegan I put it in my cart. If it wasn't vegan I made a note of it, pouted, and moved on.

Should more pumpkin items pop up over the season I will edit this post accordingly. Until then, here are my reviews of every Trader Joe's 2016 Vegan Pumpkin Product currently available (ZOMG!):

I Did A Three Day Taco Cleanse and Survived!

Disclaimer: I received The Taco Cleanse for free to review, but received no compensation. All opinions stated in this review are my own.

Y'ALL. I have so much to tell you, and not nearly enough time. I'll tell you the three most important things.

1. My computer power cord broke, and my new one is taking forever to get here. I've been able to do little bits here and there on my husband's computer, but those moments are few and far between. My new cord should be here any day now so fingers crossed!

2. I had a GREAT Thanksgiving. Did you?

3. I did not feel good after my great Thanksgiving. Did you?

Follow Your Heart VeganEgg Review

Thanksgiving is in just a few days, y'all. Can you believe it? This month has gone by so fast. I've spent it cooking a ton, and cleaning a bunch in anticipation of Thanksgiving and the following Christmas season. Though in all honesty the "Christmas season" started like the second week of November in our home. We're those people!

It certainly felt like Christmas came early when I got a call from my local vegan grocer (Rabbit Food Grocery) letting me know that their first shipment of the Follow Your Heart VeganEgg had arrived.

Veganizing Your Fridge and Pantry

* Disclaimer 1: Housevegan.com contains Amazon Affiliate links. Please see the bottom of the right sidebar for HV's Amazon Affiliate disclosure, or feel free to read this site's Disclaimer.
* Disclaimer 2: In 2013 I was awarded a free trip, cash prize, a year supply of products, merch and gift cards by Earth Balance as the grand prize winner of their Spring to Life recipe contest. This in no way influences my opinions of their products that I recommended in this post. I loved them before the contest, and continue to love them after.

If you're interested in continuing to eat the foods you've alway eaten but without animal products then this post is for you. Whether you're newly vegan, or just trying to eat more vegan foods, this list will tell you what items I recommend switching to when you're ready to stop buying milk, eggs, and meat.

This post is not about what beans I keep on hand, or what grains I love. This for those who are concerned about our oceans, but want to keep eating fish and chips. For those who go through a gallon of milk a week, but realize that non-dairy milk is the more sustainable option. For my darling readers (new and old) who still love butter, marshmallows, scrambled eggs, and honey. I got you covered.

Brunch at Counter Culture – Trendy in the Best Way

Disclaimer: This post was written as part of Eventbrite's Trends in Food and Drink Project. I was not compensated in any form by Eventbrite or Counter Culture for this review. The idea for this post, and the opinions expressed within it are my own.

If you're familiar with the vegan food scene in Austin you've likely heard of Counter Culture. Established in 2009, Counter Culture specializes in internationally inspired comfort food. While it started as a trailer, it now stands as Austin's only completely vegan brick and mortar restaurant. They're dedicated to cooking with organic, fair trade, and locally grown ingredients whenever possible as well as reusing, recycling, and composting waste.

Review for Rawxies – Snack Friendly Cookies

Disclaimer: Rawxies were provided to me for free from rawxies. No compensation was received, and all opinions are my own.

|Thank you all so much for your well wishes for our Oedipus. It just meant so much to us. He has an appointment this week for a thorough check up, and once those results are in we should know whether or not he'll need to make any dietary or lifestyle changes. We've been spoiling him with lots of wet food and love!|

I've had this review for rawxies in the works for an embarrassingly long time, and I'm happy to finally be able to share my thoughts with you! These snacks were right up my ally, and if you're into indulgent healthy snacking you might like these too.

Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Water Review

Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Milk was provided to me for free from Cocozia. No compensation was received, and all opinions are my own. Links to their Amazon page are provided in this post per their request.

This review for Cocozia's Chocolate Coconut Water is a little different from my past reviews. Whenever I review products I really like utilizing them in recipes whenever applicable. However, this coconut water inspired a straight forward review because honestly? I don't want to waste it in a recipe.

Almost Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies + Cocozia Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil Review

I'm not even almost a raw foodist, but I can always get behind eating some raw food – especially in the form of cookie dough or brownies! My first experience with raw cuisine was when the Whole Foods flagship (which those in the know call "Whole Foods Disneyland") opened in 2005. One of the first specialty food bars they had was the raw food bar which used to sit where the juice bar is now.

Funny that I'm writing a post for an old fashioned cold remedy while I'm feeling a little under the weather. Hot Toddies in their original form contain whiskey, lemon, hot water, and honey. They are incredibly soothing when you're sick. The lemon gives you a boost of Vitamin C, the hot water and honey calm sore throats, and the whiskey helps you sleep. It's an old timey solution that I welcome with a few modifications. Especially in my current state.

I love a great homemade ginger ale. When I lived in LA I used to visit a Vietnamese restaurant in Silverlake called Gingergrass, and they had the best house made ginger ale. As a sucker for quality sodas I not only ordered the ginger ale with every meal there, but I would also drive from Burbank to Silverlake to get some to go. It was a real obsession for a season.

Green Tree Jewelry Giveaway and The Christmas Creep

The Green Tree Jewelry earrings mentioned in this post were provided to me for free from Ecolissa.com. No compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to everyone who entered this giveaway! The lucky winner is HilLesha O.. Congratulations!

Happy Wednesday and Happy November! I'm so excited for today's post because I get to do something I love: give something away. I received a pair of these all-natural earrings in mid-October, but I held off on talking about them until now. I felt like a review and giveaway would go perfectly with a post about a certain underrated phenomenon - The Christmas Creep (TCC for short).

Hello friends! I wanted to talk about some behind the scenes stuff today. As bloggers we all know that blogging is the most fun work of all time. However, it still has its obligations and tasks. I'm going to be honest, there are days when I'd much rather drink hot chocolate and watch "Murder, She Wrote" than blog.

9 Year Dateiversary at Mothers Cafe in Austin

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our 9 year Dateiversary. This picture was taken on a bench in Santa Monica the weekend we got together. I can't believe that 9 years has passed! He's my favorite human, and I've loved him to pieces this whole time.

We decided to celebrate the occasion with a low key evening at Mother's Cafe. Mother's Cafe is a very old school vegetarian restaurant right in our neighborhood. It's incredibly cozy and close enough to walk to. The weather has been lovely at night, so we were excited for the stroll.

Natural Vitality’s Calm + Wendy Davis Is Awesome

Look. I am so tired. And I know this is around the time that people go crazy and abandon their MoFos, but I refuse. Even though I'm six hours from home in Lubbock, TX.

Lubbock is a weird city, which is something I'll talk about later, but until then lets talk about what's getting me through these late evenings in West Texas. It's all about Natural Vitality's Calm.

Vegan Life Magazine | Issue 1 Review

Vegan Life Magazine

“Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them.” – Samual Butler, Note-Books 1912

Last month I blogged a preview into the new magazine, Vegan Life Magazine. The first issue has finally been released, and the above quote sits on the very bottom of the Editor’s Page, setting the tone for this new publication. I’ve read the whole issue front to back, and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you.

Size

This magazine is huge! It’s at least 100 pages of relevant vegan information and ads.

Content

The content is expansive, covering news, interviews, food, beauty, lifestyle, travel, resources, and much more. As a UK-based magazine, Vegan Life covers a lot of UK news, but it offers relevant US and international news as well.

The features I loved the most were focused on other vegans, from a woman’s journey to veganism after a cancer diagnosis to a woman raising her two boys as vegans. I also enjoyed the article on a really ambitious vegan marathon runner (as an avid boot camper I’m always drawn to vegan athletes). And don’t get me started on the incredible story of a woman who rescued thousands of battery hens after a wreck near her home. It had me asking myself “What am I doing with my life?” in a good way.

My favorite article is on Donald Watson, the man who founded the Vegan Society in 1944. It’s a fascinating story, and all vegans should know about him. He was a remarkable man who did so much for this lifestyle.

Food

Let’s be real, the reason I read magazines is for the food. Vegan Life Magazine is full of food. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many recipes in a lifestyle magazine. There are raw recipes, a cheesecake recipe, and a whole feature on an Eastern feast that includes recipes. Usually, I find one or two foods to drool over in magazines, but I have plans to make every single recipe featured in this issue – starting with the Raw Apple Walnut Cake!

If you’d like to try one of the recipes, veganlifemag.co.uk has the recipe for the Soba Noodle Salad featured in the Eastern Feast. Yum!

Extra Cool

One more thing I have to mention is the Top Blog feature. As a blogger, this made me giddy with pride. I want to high five other bloggers when I know they’re being acknowledged. This issue features the lovely woman behind peasoupeats.com which is a gorgeous blog that everyone should check out.

Conclusion

While there are many great vegan magazines out there I feel like this is the first one to cover any and everything. No matter what part of veganism interests you, you will find something you like. This review only covers bits and pieces. It’s just so big!

Congratulations, Vegan Life Magazine! I can’t wait for your next issue.

Samoa Bliss Balls

Select products mentioned in this post were provided for free from Nutiva. No compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

It’s 2014. All cookies should be vegan at this point. Samoas are my all time favorite Girl Scout cookie, but I haven’t had one in over 10 years. There are recipes out there for vegan samoas that tend to be a little time consuming, and the question on making them really becomes “How badly do I want these suckers?”. Usually not enough to spend forever in the kitchen.

Thank goodness these Samoa Bliss Balls completely satisfy my cravings for chocolate, coconut and vanilla cookies. They are so much healthier for you than the real deal, and even contain lots of good-for-you fats, fiber and protein.

Like my Thin Mint Bliss Balls these were developed when Nutiva sent me their Organic Hemp Protein Shakes. This recipe uses the vanilla flavor which is my favorite of the two. Combined with mildly flavored nuts and dates the vanilla flavor really comes through in the bliss balls.

Superfoods in every sense of the word!

These powders are so good and good for you. Just as a refresher, here’s what the Nutiva website states about their super powders:
  • Delicious flavors
  • Plant-based protein
  • Made from raw hempseeds
  • Certified organic and non-GMO
  • Vegan
  • All 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential
  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3 & 6)
  • Good source of dietary fiber
  • Gently cold-processed
  • Never hexane processed
  • Non-irradiated
  • Always chemical free
  • non-BPA container

Every time I eat one of these I have to smile at how good I’m being to myself. The toasted coconut makes them decadent while the nuts and dates give you energy that lasts and lasts. We’ve been eating them before bootcamp, and just one or two sustains us through lap after lap, burpee after burpee, lunge after lunge, box jump after box jump…you get the idea! We’re hooked, and you will be too.

Samoa Bliss Balls – Makes about 22
  • 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup raw cashew pieces
  • 4 fresh, pitted dates
  • 3 tablespoons vanilla protein powder (I highly recommend Nutiva’s Organic Vanilla Hemp Protein Shake)
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (I used Nutiva’s amazing Organic Virgin Coconut Oil – More on that later)
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa nibs
1. Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Spread the sweetened coconut onto a small baking sheet or skillet and toast for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown.
2. While the coconut toasts put the unsweetened coconut, cashews, dates, and hemp powder into a food processor and process until coarse. Add the agave nectar, and coconut oil and process until combined.
3. Pour the mixture into a bowl, and fold in the toasted coconut and cocoa nibs.
4. Roll the mixture into balls by the tablespoon, and place them on parchment paper. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

* Full disclosure, I rolled a few balls in toasted coconut for the food picture. It’s not necessary, but if yours look different from mine that’s probably why!
