Hi, friends! I hope you're doing well. I hope your spring has been relaxing, sunny, and full of flowers. Ours has been busy, rainy, and kind of buggy. Experiencing this season for the first time in the condo has brought on a few surprises. For instance, our parking spots happen to be under this big beautiful tree that beautifully sheds…I don't know…pollen? It only takes 2-3 days after washing for my car to look super dirty again. And entering my car is always a little adventure because the spring weather and the big tree has basically turned the inside of it into Jumanji.

It's ok though because by and large it's been a fun spring. We actually had house guests all weekend which was a blast. Firstly, we loved turning our second bedroom into an adorable office/guestroom. Secondly, house guests are fun! We ate pizza, played games, went to the arcade, drank beer, and attended a Three Amigos party at Alamo Drafthouse. We're old so we're exhausted now, but it was all so worth it.

I am SO EXCITED for the new Beauty and the Beast movie, you guys! I'm honestly so behind on Disney's modern live action remakes – I've only seen The Jungle Book, but it was so good that I can't believe I've missed the others.

It's just hard to make time for movies, you know? I'm all up on this one, though. It looks absolutely beautiful with those dark blues and that old-world Fantasyland castle. I'm mean lookit:

Good morning, friends! This month's Coffee Break with Hannah (see January's here) is a little wild. I'm incorporating it into this coffee themed post because I'll be real, this month has been almost 100% dedicated to moving. February has been all about packing and cleaning as we planned for an early to mid-March move. On February 14th (aw!) we closed on our condo, and soon after we found a sublet for our apartment – something we honestly didn't think was going to happen. All of the sudden instead of having a month to leisurely move, we had about a week. Oy! That's a happy "oy", but an "oy" nonetheless.

So we've been very busy and I've had barely enough time to shower let alone pamper myself. Luckily I had previously created this Quick, Relaxing & Lifting Coffee and Donuts Themed Beauty Routine specifically to pamper myself on busy weekday mornings. Who knew these products would become my self-care staples this month?

Easy Bar Soap to Shower Gel DIY

lush diy, vegan lush, soap diy, lush soap diy, vegan soap diy, turning bar soap to body wash, turning bar soap to shower gel

This Easy Bar Soap to Shower Gel DIY is so simple and fun that you might suddenly find yourself with way too many homemade shower gels. As an avid Lush fan I know the excess soap struggle all too well. I currently have 5 different bottles of shower gels and creams in my possession not to mention the various other soups, jellies, etc. I get to choose from everyday. As obscene as that sounds, my collection is pitiful compared to other Lushies out there. There are people with entire closets and rooms dedicated to their collections. I'm not that intense, but I am a big fan. My shower and bath products are almost exclusively Lush.

Revitalizing DIY Chocolate Face Mask

This Revitalizing DIY
Chocolate Face Mask was created in my kitchen when I realized that my reliance on Lush's Cupcake Fresh Face Mask was completely unsustainable. Have you ever used Lush's face masks? They're pure magic for the skin. Cupcake kept my skin clear, soft, bright, and seemingly younger while smelling like luscious mint chocolate cake. Sadly though, there came a point when I needed to be real with myself about this mask.

I'm going to be really honest with you today. In a world full of #blessed and humblebrags, we don't often disclose how things are going behind the scenes. Today I'm gonna be real. I've been struggling with some stuff recently, and those struggles have been made more difficult by my lack of patience with myself. I've been feeling super lame about my inability to work through this bump.

Sometimes I step away from work so that I can deal with personal things that need to be dealt with. I then find it extremely difficult to go back to creating because I feel really bad about falling behind. I'll tell myself that this makes me unprofessional and selfish among other things. That kind of self-bullying makes it hard to feel motivated. Do you ever bully yourself? I do constantly, and from a blogger's perspective it's hard to not feel alone in this.

How to Make Moisturizing Pumpkin Coffee Sugar Scrub

Before moving on to these delicious Brown Sugar &  Maple Apple Crumb Muffins here is a disclaimer: Housevegan.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. Happy November and happy National Pumpkin Scrub day! Just kidding, it's not National Pumpkin Scrub day. I don't think. There's a day for everything now so I wouldn't be surprised. This scrub is fantastic, but not so fantastic that it needs its own day. However, it is much better than the item whose day it actually is today, deviled eggs. If November 2nd has to be a national day of something ridiculous then I vote for this body scrub over eggs. It's exfoliating, it's moisturizing, it's seasonally appropriate, and it's a delightful addition to your morning shower. It's also fat free and cholesterol free as long as you don't eat it.

Please don't eat it.

Daily Lemon Oatmeal Face Wash and Scrub

The last 10 days have been very difficult for my family. Not only did we lose one of our own, but there has also been a semi layoff. Luckily…hopefully…it’s semi and temporary. The thing about money is it flows. It comes and goes often completely independent of how hard you work. I’ve been a broke kid working 3 jobs, a comfortable housewife, and a successful working woman. I’ve seen many sides of financial (in)stability.

Something I’ve learned from my experiences is that you must understand how to use your money no matter how much or little you make. Being clever with your income is a must, and using money goes beyond just making and spending. One of my favorite ways to use money efficiently is to make what is easily make-able. So many things we all buy are easy to make, cheaper to make and healthier to boot. One of these items is face wash.

All of the ingredients here are extremely affordable, and found in your kitchen.

Baking soda works as an incredible exfoliant while oatmeal and chamomile are soothing enough to balance out its potency. Meanwhile the lemon zest adds a boost of detoxifying power and a wonderful refreshing quality. If you can afford to spend the extra bit, I highly recommend using an organic lemon since you need the zest. Better not to rub crazy chemicals all over your face!

I’ve been using this wash for about a month, and I’m in love with it. I haven’t had breakouts or dryness or any of the other common side effects of switching out a face wash. My skin looks better than ever.

Daily Lemon Oatmeal Face Wash and Scrub
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 teaspoons loose chamomile tea
  • 6 teaspoons baking soda
  • zest from 1 large lemon
1. In a coffee grinder or nut grinder grind the oats and chamomile tea to a flour like consistency.
2. Pour the mixture into a bowl and stir in the baking soda and lemon zest.
3. Store your scrub in an airtight container. I keep my scrub in the fridge, but you probably don’t have to.

To Use:
1. Remove make-up or anything else on your face with olive oil/makeup remover/cold cream/whatever you use.
2. Mix equal parts of the scrub and water and use as you would any other face wash. I use about a teaspoon of scrub and water for my face.
3. Follow up with a toner and moisturizer.

*One thing to note is that I have normal/oily skin. If your skin is on the drier side I recommend researching baking soda before using it on your face. It’s great for oily complexions, but I’m not sure about dry complexions.

Winter Femininity: 5 Items Keeping HV Neat and Pretty

Here’s the thing about Winter: I don’t like it. I find it cold, drying, and completely uninspiring. The clothes are binding, the mindset is sleepy, and the shoes are clunky. No thank you!

Now that my Grouch McCouch truth is out there let me share what I’ve been doing to keep myself feeling as lovely as possible while weathermen use words like thundersleet. In Texas.

Which Hazel makes a great toner. This particular brand smells and feels incredible, and is well known among vintage beauty enthusiasts for good reason. It’s supposedly age defying! I’m not one to defy age, but I love this witch hazel either way.

This smells like a princess, and will make your skin softer than you thought imaginable. I spread a thick layer over myself before getting in the shower, and the result is nothing short of delightful.

Image is from the tutorial I use on Pinterest.

Sleeping in is a fact of winter life. I love mornings, but waking up cold is unpleasant, and often gets pushed until the last minute. When morning prep is forced to be efficient my hair will likely get thrown into a messy bun. Usually messier than intended, but I’m proud of the effort.

http://www.eyeslipsface.com/elf/eyes/eyeliner/liquid_eyeliner_

As mentioned above I tend to sleep in during the winter time. Most mornings the best I can do to the ole face is a lazy cat eye. Liquid eyeliner is a must for this, and e.l.f. makes the cheapest vegan one around.

5. Cinnamon Perfume Oil Roll On
Image used with permission from pldbody.

This roll on is spicy, warm, long lasting and smells like straight up cinnamon. I find the scent not only comforting, but also a tad sexy. I bought it from pldbody, an Etsy store specializing in “Handmade Natural and Vegan Bath and Body”. I’m really in love with this little roll on, and will definitely be trying more from this store!

While these items have made this winter a little more bearable I’m really hoping that March will warm things up. Spring Break and SXSW should mean eating tacos outside with a citrusy beer or two. Come on 80 degrees!

Femininity: Olive Oil

Olive oil is unbelievably good for the skin. Its moisturizing effects are healthy, long lasting and good for all skin types. You can cleanse with it, shave with it and yes, even eat it. Consuming the healthy fats in olive oil can help regulate cell metabolism and turnover, leaving your skin new and fresh.

I use olive oil every night around my eyes. It softens that sensitive skin and can smooth out wrinkles. I don’t have any wrinkles as of yet. That could be age, but it could also very well be the olive oil! I put a small amount on one side of a cotton ball and use that to remove my eye makeup. There will be leftover olive oil around my eyes which is a good thing! I’ll then wash my face with a gentle face wash, spreading with it the leftover oil and it’s moisturizing magic. Then I’ll rinse, dry and marvel at my clean and glowing face.

I am fascinated by the Oil Cleansing Method and think that the upcoming Winter season will be the perfect time to try it.

Femininity: Autumn Skin Care

Here are all the magical soaps, lotions and potions keeping me beautiful this Autumn.

Lush: Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub

A gentle exfoliate and soap for the body. My husband says it smells like a new shoe but I think it smells fresh and almost oceany.

Lush: Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner

A conditioner for the body. It smells beautiful. Rosey and sweet. You apply it in the shower after washing and let it sit for a minute or so to soak in. Then rinse it off and pat dry. It’s moisturizing powers are astonishing and it never feels greasy.

Shea Moisture: Raw Shea Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Healing Lotion

This lotion is made with a ton of different oils and smells like gently spiced oranges and milk (and I guess the advertised Frankincense and Myrrh.) It’s so moisturizing that I only need a tiny bit per area. It has a very heavy feel on application but lightens up almost immediately. Maybe if I treat my skin like baby skin it will eventually become baby soft.

Lush: Silky Underwear Dusting Powder

A moisturizing dusting powder. This is an especially good product to apply before working out. And of course it smells wonderful.

Lush: Imogen Rose Perfume

A rosey perfume that smells more woodsy than sweet. It’s sophisticated and gorgeous.

All these combined make me smell like a Disney princess looks. Can you tell I love Lush?
