Hi friends! I have a super simple recipe to share today for Easy DIY Two Ingredient Flaxseed Hair Gel. This stuff may or may not change your entire hair game. It changed mine, I can tell you that.

I love love love doing my hair in vintage styles. I love vintage beauty in general, but specifically hair. It’s not uncommon to find me cleaning with curlers in my hair, and I’ve definitely left the house with my pincurls tied up in a scarf.

Grainy IG pic, it’s fine!

When you’ve been setting your hair for as long as I have you start to just not care about such things because you know the end result is going to be beautiful.

The thing about me and vintage curls is that I need something in my hair to give it oomph and hold. Just putting my hair in curlers will do absolutely nothing. They’ll be gone before I’m even done brushing out. So years ago I started the search for my favorite hair gel, setting lotion, or mousse. However, that search went on for far too long and yielded basically no results. They were always too expensive, too heavy, too light, too sticky, too weak, too stiff, too etc.. After years of this nonsense, I just decided to try making my own.

I figured I’d try a basic flaxseed hair gel based on advice from my favorite vintage hair facebook group.  I thought I’d make a test batch, and adjust it until I made something that worked.

I ended up loving it at first try.

This DIY flaxseed hair gel is perfect for my hair. It holds my curls but allows them to be flexible. Not just flexible but soft. I swear this gel conditions a bit too! And because I don’t curl my hair all of the time (I wish!) I can still use this flaxseed gel to give my straight, unstyled hair a little more body and mold-ability should I decide to wear it up.

It feels a bit thin out of the bottle and because the consistency is looser than traditional gel it can get messy. And by messy I mean snotty. I know that’s gross, but it is a little reminiscent of snot. The only surprise I want you to experience here is its surprising effectiveness.

I can’t say how it’ll work for your hair, but my hair loves it. For the record, my hair is of medium thickness, very straight, and I have a lot of it on my head.

Easy DIY Two Ingredient Flaxseed Hair Gel
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 tablespoons whole flaxseeds

1. Combine the water and flaxseeds in a saucepan, and place it over medium heat.

2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, and allow it to boil for 10-13 minutes until becomes thicker and gelatinous.

3. Strain the mixture over a bowl using a fine mesh strainer. Use a spoon to stir and push the gel through the strainer. This may get a little messy, but keep going.

4. Discard the leftover flaxseeds, and store the hair gel in a container in the fridge. I used this handy squeeze bottle, but you can use a jar, Tupperware, whatever.
