To share my love for the holiday I’ve assembled this post on how to do Halloween night HV style. Whether you’re new to vegan Halloween, bored with your current routine or just looking for some ideas, check out my guide to a cruelty free Halloween!

Candy is synonymous with Halloween, but it can be a tricky situation for vegans. Unfortunately, a lot of seemingly vegan candies aren’t vegan due to particular offenders. When searching for vegan Halloween candy make sure to check ingredient lists for:
The Obvious Offenders
• Milk
• Eggs
• Gelatin
• Honey
• Beeswax
• Whey
These ingredients are no-nos to vegans, and are very commonly found in candy. Avoid these jerks.
The Sneaky Offenders
• Shellac (which is also labeled as confectioner’s glaze)
• Carmine
• Cochineal
These common candy ingredients are by-products of bugs, and unless you’re into that I would suggest avoiding them as well.
The Questionable Offenders
• Refined sugar
• Artificial food dye
These two are difficult because so many candies would be one hundred percent vegan without them. Most refined sugar in the United States is filtered through bone char, and many food dyes are tested on animals.
My thinking is this: if you’re vegan, and you want to buy Halloween candy that is inexpensive, and just free of the Obvious and Tricky Offenders, then you have a lot of options. Resources like vegnews.com and peta.org both have candy guides full of those kinds of candies.
However, if you’re looking for candies that are free of all the three types of offenders then check out the following totally vegan and totally delicious following products:

Just because you’re vegan doesn’t mean that you have to be the toothbrush house on the block. There are many options available to you and your trick-or-treaters. If you want, you can even avoid candy by passing out store-bought snack packs of pretzels, popcorn, chips, and other savory goodies.
One year when I was a kid, my neighbors gave out cold cans of caffeine-free soda. It was awesome! I don’t know if you could get away with that now, but I thought it was clever, and I really enjoyed my ice-cold root beer while walking from house to house.
Not all treats need to be reserved for Trick or Treaters. The following store-bought sweets aren’t great for handing out, but they are great for feeding the sugar monster within.

I can’t keep my hands out of the candy bowl so I like to make a good assortment of Halloween treats to ensure that I’m not just constantly eating candy. Here are some homemade treats to have on hand throughout the month:

- Monster Halloween Candy Bark (Fork and Beans)

- Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie Energy Bites (Leelalicious)
- Peanut Butter Popcorn (It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken)

Whether you eat dinner before or after the festivities, it’s important to get something nutritious in you. Eating tons of sugar is unavoidable on Halloween (at least in my house) so make sure you get a vitamin or two with some real food. Here are a few ideas for pre or post Trick or Treating dinner:
You know what though? I’m also not above ordering a vegan pizza on Halloween. Vitamins? Very little. Better than straight sugar? You betcha.
You should have something decent to drink on Halloween, alcohol or no. For the alcoholic drinks mentioned, I scoured Barnivore to see if some of my favorite Fall beverages are vegan and thankfully they are. There are no spooky non-vegan ingredients like isinglass, honey, casein, gelatin, or lactose lurking in these particular drinks.
